Can eye infections be transmitted through sight?

1
Have you ever avoided looking at a friend who had eye problems? It's because many people believe that eye problems can be transmitted through eye contact. But is that really true?

"There's a highly contagious eye disease called conjunctivitis, or pink eye in English. The symptoms include a lot of discharge and a sticky discharge in the morning, and it can be highly contagious. But the cause isn't from looking at things," said Dr. Rina La Distia Nora, SpM(K), PhD, from the Indonesian Ophthalmologist Association (PERDAMI), Tuesday (10/30/2018).

Conjunctivitis is caused by a virus, but viruses can't simply jump from eye to eye. The primary source of infection is unsanitary hands.

"The important thing is hand hygiene, because when we are sick, we usually wipe our hands, so the virus on our hands, if we touch our hands or lick our hands, there is still a little virus," said Dr. Rina.

In fact, the virus can also stick to other objects touched by contaminated hands. If, for example, the table isn't cleaned, the virus can survive for up to five months!

So, it's crucial to maintain our eye health by also maintaining good personal hygiene, especially our hands. You don't want to wake up with eye discharge, do you?
